Government and Economy

Colombia is the oldest democracy in the region and the 2nd oldest of the Americas, (after the United States). Although not without problems, compared to the rest of Latin America, and many European countries, Colombia has had remarkable institutional stability since 1819.

It is a democratic republic, with a bicameral congress an executive branch, that is headed by the President of the Republic and judicial branch headed by the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court.
